THE NEXT MORNING
As I awakened the next morning, I had to call into the school I taught at to take what is called in teaching, "an emergency personal day." I was teaching English literature at Passaic County Technical and Vocational High School at the time. Robby's operation was scheduled for 9:00 AM and I was too distracted to teach that day, and wanted to be alerted as soon as the operation was completed.

After making the call, I just went to lie down on my bed to think about things and sort out the troubling feelings I had especially after the ghostly dream I had the previous night. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF WHAT I'M ABOUT TO REVEAL! I NEVER LOST CONSCIOUSNESS AS THE FOLLOWING EVENTS UNFOLDED! If you want to attribute this to "falling asleep", stop reading this now. I can only say that I know when I'm awake! There was no doubt that I was awake when this happened.

I lay down on my left side with my right hand and arm hanging over the side of the bed. This is very important to note as the event unfolded!
Questions relating to the previous night's dream were racing through my head. I had never had a dream of a "dead" person, and realized during the dream that the person was "dead". Lucidity has to be at a high level to make this connection. Although I was raised Roman Catholic, I had no spiritual beliefs at the time, I was thinking, "Was this dream a bad "sign" regarding Robby's operation which was going to start within the hour?
Wrestling with these thoughts, I suddenly had this idea! "If I could only switch places with Robby, and take the pain and fear upon myself, I certainly would!" This was the only time in my life at the time that I guess I put my own welfare second to another. I wasn't a selfish person, but always put my own self before anyone else. This was a sincere and spontaneous thought and I wished desperately I could spare this child the pain!
